City Meteor Spotting: Techniques for the Urban Astronomer

Light pollution is the nemesis of stargazers. Cities bathe the night sky in a haze of artificial light, washing out all but the brightest stars. Yet, some celestial events remain visible even in the most urban of settings. Meteor showers are one of them. With the right techniques, you can still enjoy these fleeting cosmic fireworks from your city rooftop.

Understanding Meteor Showers

Before we dive into the techniques, let's quickly understand what you're up against---and what's still visible.

  • Meteors vs. Meteorites: Meteors are tiny particles (often just dust) burning up in our atmosphere. Only the very largest make it to the ground as meteorites.

  • Camera Apps with Long Exposure: Some smartphone cameras or third-party apps allow manual exposure control. They can be a surprisingly effective way to capture meteors.
  • Live Streaming: Consider live-streaming your meteor watch. You might capture a meteor on camera that you missed with the naked eye.

Technique 6: Be Patient and Prepared
