  • Dynamic Range: The scene has extreme contrast: faint stars against a black sky, and a dark foreground against a potentially bright horizon (from distant cities or moon glow). Shooting RAW is your safety net. Expose to the right (ETTR) slightly if your camera has good dynamic range, meaning push the histogram as far right as possible without clipping the stars. You can recover incredible shadow detail in the foreground later.
  • Tides & Safety: This cannot be overstated. Know the tide tables for your specific location. A rising tide can cut off your escape route. Wear proper footwear for slippery rocks. Never turn your back on the ocean.

The Final Development: Post-Processing Essentials

  1. Basic Corrections: In Lightroom or Capture One, correct lens profile (distortion, vignetting), adjust white balance to a natural cool tone, and apply noise reduction (especially for high ISO).
  2. Contrast & Clarity: Use Dehaze or Clarity sparingly to make the Milky Way pop. A S-curve in the tone curve panel adds global contrast.
  3. Local Adjustments: Use graduated filters to subtly darken a bright horizon or lighten the foreground. Use radial filters to gently brighten the core of the Milky Way.
  4. Star Reduction (Optional): Too many pinpoint stars can be distracting. A subtle Noise Reduction applied locally to the sky, or a Star Masking technique in Photoshop, can make the main Milky Way cloud structures stand out more.
